Into the Wild

Publish Date: Monday, July 6, 2009
We arrived in Canada yesterday evening, checking in at Meldrum Bay on Manitoulin Island. Today we cruised across the North Channel to Beardrop Harbour in the Whalesback Channel. As the saying goes, “This is why we came.” It’s wild and beautiful here, in that northern Canadian way; I expect to see a bear on shore at any moment. The weather is not great — cloudy, windy, cool, with some threatening looking clouds moving in — but we’re warm and snuggly inside Three@Sea. It’s fun to be back at anchor after a few months mostly at docks.

Our summer cruising plan is progressing as we had hoped. We will spend a couple weeks exploring the North Channel, and then we’ll head to Port Severn at the base of Georgian Bay. From there we’ll traverse the Trent-Severn Waterway for a couple weeks, taking us back to Lake Ontario, and then we will turn northeast. We will complete the “Down East Circle” by going out the St. Lawrence Seaway and around the Canadian Maritime Provinces. It’s still an aggressive schedule that we’ll be keeping, but we’re excited about all that we’re seeing, and all the experience we’re getting.

The wind is picking up now, but our anchor is holding firm. As the boat sails gently back and forth on the hook, I can feel myself relaxing. Piccadilly is fast asleep on the pilot house berth — I may have to join her for my first nap in several months. 🙂

Hi Dave! Welcome to the North Channel! Sorry the weather couldn’t be better, not sure why but this summer isn’t really summer like at all. I guess it is okay for water levels (look carefully on rock shores, you can see the high water mark of the 80’s a full 3′ or more above current levels) but it sure isn’t great for enjoying the channel. Hopefully you will get some 30C heat and sunshine before you leave the channel. Hope the nap went well!

Here’s a boat that sailed around my town, Portland, OR, and a couple times, when looking down from the freeway bridge above, (satellite view) , I’ve seen it moored in the river.

Here’s a boat that sailed around the world, and a story of the adventure.
