Little Current

We spent the last couple days/nights moored in a small town called Little Current, which is approximately at the mid-point of our North Channel cruising route. We found the people and businesses in Little Current to be delightful. Everybody is friendly and helpful, in a low-key Canadian sort of way. It’s just the way they are — it’s not like they have to work at it. Those of you who have spent any time in Canada know what I mean.

One of the institutions of the North Channel cruising experience is the Little Current Cruisers’ Net, which broadcasts on VHF 71 every morning at 9am. Roy Eaton is the host and driving force behind this entertaining and useful broadcast. The Net includes the weather forecast, current news and sports, “on this day in history”, emergency/priority messages to cruisers, and a roll-call of all boats within range. It was fun for us to check in with the Net each morning as we were approaching Little Current from the west. And then when we were in Little Current we attended the Net in person, sitting with Roy and other cruisers on the second floor of The Anchor Inn during the broadcast. The average number of check-ins each day while we’ve been here has been 70-80 boats, which is a lot of cruisers!

Roy thought our voyage and Ayla’s work on ocean conservation were noteworthy, and he invited Alya to say a few words on the Net one morning. It was really fun for Ayla, and it allowed her to spread the word about how all of us can help save our seas. We want to thank Roy for encouraging Ayla’s work, both in word and deed. We’ve also heard from many cruisers since her broadcast, and we want to thank everybody for their kind words about Ayla’s work.

Little Current was a delightful stop on our journey through the North Channel. We look forward to visiting again someday.
