Publish Date: Sunday, September 6, 2009In Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island, we were lucky enough to come across a jewel of a restaurant. This restaurant is called Flex Mussels, and, as the name suggests, it specializes in the well-known P.E.I. Mussels. One word to sum up this experience: DELICIOUS!!!!!!!
We were lucky enough to be able to get a peak into the kitchen of this amazing bistro, which was fantastic. The entire restaurant is well-run, clean, and full of friendly, smiling faces. The chef was kind enough to let us watch while he cooked our fresh mussel dinners. I had the Thai dinner, which was mussels in the most delicious exotic sauce that tasted like the hills of Southeast Asia and the waters of P.E.I., all in one dish. It was fabulous! Mom had a Jamaican mussel dish, which was very exotic and spicy. Dad had the classic, which is white wine and herbs, so it really focuses on the flavor of the mussels.
Watching Chef Mitchell prepare our meals was fascinating. He simmered, sautéed, steamed, andsizzled the mussels, releasing mouthwatering aromas of herbs, exotic sauces, and of course, the sweet mussels. The flames on my mom’s Jamaican spice were incredible! Fire Hazard :)!
The best part, though, was the people. Everyone at Flex Mussels was welcoming, kind, smiling, and knowledgeable, as well as proud of their beautiful island. As we cruise away from Prince Edward Island tomorrow, Flex Mussels will be a sparkling gem in the jewels of our journey’s necklace.
Hi Ayla. I am realy happy that you enjoy all the foods that you are encountering. To be a real foodie is living an adventure all in it’s self. I live near people that think that a food adventure is to through a cob of corn in the Mic. and that it. A hot, mushy, and bland thing to be shure. So have a second adventure, with your first one, as you travel around the world. Sample as much as you can, and enjoy it all. What a lucky girl you and your mom and dad are. Smooth sailing to you all and always be safe.
Hi Ayla,
You are an amazing young lady. I am always so impressed to read your blogs and hear your take on your adventures. You’re very bright and your parents must be so proud.
I’m happy that you’re able to experience this wonderful time in your life. The people you meet, the places you see and yes, even the food you get to eat. Although mussels most certainly are NOT one of my favorite foods, you make them sound yummy! lol
Enjoy you trip and may the sea always be smooth and the wind always be at your back.
Best regards,
Michelle
Keep on sailing ,always look forward to the bloggs .People on P.E.I.are great! Hope you have good weather in Nova Scotia.
Hey!i’m having cheeseburgers and good ole eastern shore of md home grown tomatoe’s
Hi Ayla, Catherine & Dave,
‘Been enjoying your respective blogs. Had a couple of near misses with some Nordhavn enthusisasts. I’m assuming you may make a stop in Baddeck on Cape Breton Island. If you do, and if you have time and if you want some local contacts (I spent three summers living at Beinn Breagh-aka Red Head), just let me know.
All the best, Ben, Dave, Jen and Paula in the Nordhavn Northeast office,
Hello Ayla;
I am so envious. A few years ago I was driving in Nova Scotia planning to go next to PEI to get some Mussels when my dear wife got tired of the driving and couldn’t face the prospect of a longer drive back to the states so I had to cut the trip short.
Luckily here in Boulder I can get my PEI Mussel fix at either Dolans, The Med or Brasserie 1010 who all serve great Mussels the traditioal way. But I am still sorry I didn’t make it to PEI.
Hello Ayla
I will soon be purchasing my first Nordhavn boat and of course I came across your youtube videos which lead me to your blog. I wanted to say that I really enjoy “from the pilot house” It has taught me a lot and helped me look forward to traveling around the world on my boat.
I am thankful there is a blog to also speak with your parents and ask lots of questions from. I lived in Boulder, Colorado for 18 years and just recently moved so I feel as if your family could have been my neighbors.
I also love your “save the sea’s” campaign. You are a very smart, talented and fun host to listen to. I think what you and your parents are doing is amazing and I wish you well on all your journey’s. You can read about me, at http://successsystemsnow.com for now, just know that I love “from the pilot house” and look forward to the next episode.
Feel the rain on your face no one else can feel it for you.
