And space coast it is! We just arrived in Port Canaveral Florida this afternoon, and we’ve already had an amazing Space experience! The Atlantis Space Shuttle launched today from NASA Space Center in Port Canaveral.
We are staying only about ten miles away from where the shuttle launches! It was a thrilling and exhilarating experience to stand on our flybridge and watch the infamous fireball ascend into the sky, zooming towards the final frontier. The comet-like fireball was a brilliant yellow orange that streaked in and out of the clouds, and darted from land to the vast universe far above. About a minute after launch, the deafening rumble reached us across the bay. We followed the smoky trail and the orange fire all the way, until it disappeared, arriving in the inky blanket of space.
We could even see the tiny white dots of the booster rockets falling back down to Earth! Wouldn’t that be a surprise to be cruising along on watch, then…BAM…two booster rockets arrive next to you! Talk about a conversation starter :-). As we watched the misty trail fade into the clouds, it was awe-inspiring to think of the six brave souls who were sitting up in space, looking down onto the Blue Planet. I wonder what they are thinking and doing right now?
Hi Ayla, we follow your families voyage with great interest and admiration. Have you heard back from the Today show yet? I’d think they’d love to have someone like you on their reporting team.
All the best. The Treglowns.
Wow! what an opportunity to see something like that from your very own perch!
Ayla,
Wow! We watched an Atlas launch from Spanish Wells last year. We were with Cowbell and everyone thought it was fireworks until it just kept going and going. It couldn’t compare to your view though.
My roommate in the Navy hods the record for most launches as Shuttle commander. I tried to get a ride with him but he couldn’t sneak me aboard.
We arrived in Mendoza yesterday after transferring through Santiago. When will you be here? If you hurry we can meet you in Santiago in Feb.
Enjoy the warm weather.

i wish i was there.
That one is on my bucket list. For years i have been trying to catch a lift off, and you folks got it in one day! How lucky is that, glad you got to experience it and share it with us, and pictures to boot!
We found your youtube videos and website last week.
I kept checking back for a video update and today just read that the remainder of the adventure is being postponed a year.
We are in the early stages of making more armature series of videos that we are thinking of naming “Cruising Kids.”
We are a family of five and spend much of the summer on our cruiser, a 280 Sundnacer on the Wisconsin instate waterway called the Winnebago Pool chain of lakes.
We are hoping to make a kid hosted series of videos about our boating adventures and destinations. budget is puny. We have no sponsors and will be using armature equipment.
Could you share any advice you may have with us? What are you doing different after making several videos? Do you “story board” and plan the videos or shoot them ad hock then edit the pieces later?
Thank you for any advice you have.
When are you going to make more videos?
