This is a spoiler-free review:

Hey all! I just finished reading a FANTASTIC series called Percy Jackson and the Olympians! The movie is coming out on February 12, and I decided that I really should read the books before I see the movie. There are five books in the series…

  • Lightening Thief
  • Sea of Monsters
  • Titans Curse
  • Battle of the Labyrinth
  • Last Olympian

…and each are magnificent! The main plot of the story is that the Olympian gods and goddesses are very much alive, along with Mt. Olympus, the Underworld, the Labyrinth, and all the violent monsters. The gods and goddesses have children who are half-mortal, half-god. These children are called demi-gods, and because of their Olympian blood, they are in a lot of danger in the mortal world, so they go to Camp Half-Blood to train for the dangers of monsters in the real world. Percy Jackson, and his friends Annabeth, Grover, Tyson, Rachel, Nico, and many others set out to save the world from the growing threat of the Titan Lord, Kronos.

This series is exciting, interesting, and bursting with fascinating tales of myths and legends. It is a bit violent, because a lot of it is battles and fights with swords and knives against some pretty ruthless beings, but all in all, it is SO good. I highly recommend this series for anyone who likes fantasy, adventure, mythology, friendship, prophecy, and amazing plot turns you may have never expected! Actually, I recommend this series to anyone who can read.  🙂

Everyone here just finished reading The Lightning Thief. I’m reading it out loud for Brian, as he wouldn’t dare pick up a book with that many words. I notice the whole family sitting around listening when I start. Even Brian tells me to keep going when I get to the end of each chapter.
Unfortunately, we only brought that book. We didn’t realize it was a series. Oh well, I can see what our first purchase will be when we get back to Ohio.
Have you read any of E.L. Konigsburg? Her stuff is terrific.

Keep up the good reading, Ayla – I expect to see your reviews in the NYTimes Review of Books soon!

Thanks for the report; I look forward to the movie. Someday i will get back to reading stories and not technical books.
Enjoy the winter in Florida, the weather here is snowy and brisk winds.
We like the winter; it helps us really appreciate spring!
Say hi to everyone and give dilly a hug.

    Hi again Ayla!

I quite agree with your take on the series. I read all to/with my son Ben (you didn’t meet him at Wheeler) and we both enjoy them immensely. Ben turns 13 on Sunday and he’s now really into the Alex Rider series, sort of a young (14) James Bond whose late father and uncle worked for MI6 and by association got young Alex recruited. Thanks for all your (and your ‘rents’) blogs! Keep ’em coming.
    Ben

    Hey Ayla and family!
It’s Alex Crowe here! Just wondering where you might be on your journey around Christmas or Spring break (next year of course!) I have been hoping for ages to visit you! Let me know! Thanks
    XOXO alex
